Meet Melanie Thompson

Melanie Thompson, a seasoned civic leader and housing proponent, brings over 20 years of experience in Corporate Marketing and Advertising to her role on the Planning Board. “I'm pleased to announce my 

 re-election to the Planning Board. Your support has been invaluable during my first term.”

With over 12 years in elected positions with the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee and many more as a volunteer activist, she is knowledgeable about housing, zoning, diversity and equity, and other statewide issues, in addition to these same issues at the local level.

Born in Cambridge, MA, and a graduate of the Lexington Public Schools, Melanie's deep roots in the community fuel her passion for addressing housing, zoning, and other challenges facing the Planning Board.

With a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from HBCU Hampton University in Virginia and an MBA from Pace University in New York, Melanie combines her educational background with a wealth of professional experience. Before dedicating herself to public service, she served as a Marketing and Sales Account Manager. She is also a licensed Real Estate agent in Massachusetts.

Melanie was first elected to the Planning Board in 2021, and she assumed the role of Clerk in 2023. Prior to her Planning Board tenure, Melanie served on the Housing Partnership Board and has represented Precinct 5 in Town Meeting since 2019. Beyond her elected roles, she has actively served as a liaison to numerous town committees, including the Comprehensive Plan, Transportation Advisory Committee, and Diversity Advisory Task Force. 

Melanie has played a role in planning several of Lexington’s annual Martin Luther King Day celebrations, showcasing her commitment to fostering community engagement and inclusivity.

"I believe in the power of community engagement and the impact it can have on shaping the future of our town. Through collaboration and active participation, we can create positive change and address the challenges we face, particularly in the areas of zoning, housing and diversity.

In addition to her civic work, Melanie is a passionate fundraiser for various causes and a lifelong learner. Her commitment to personal growth is reflected in her recent pursuit of a new passion for swimming. Melanie also enjoys spending time with her little Cavalier Ruby, adding a delightful touch to her multifaceted life.
